Day Eight, December Eight

Day Eight–December Eight #25DaysofChristmas #SweetSweatCountdown

Activity du jour: Jingle Bell Jog in Brooklyn!

The only thing better than the sound of jingle bells, is the sound of thousands of them on a quiet, foggy Saturday morning rising up from the middle of Prospect Park.

I just knew it was going to be an awesome day when I hopped in a cab and my driver laughed and said, "This is fun...where to, Miss Santa?"  Then he told me he had no idea where to drop me off, but that once we got to the park I could probably follow the other santas in costume. "There will be thousands", he said.

Running a race is amazing in and of its self...but add in jingle bells, crazy costumes, and red & green bagels and you've got a perfect recipe for thousands of stupidly happy people.  I haven't even mentioned the hot chocolate and Christmas music.

Would I run the race again?? Der... you don't even have to ask.  All you need to wonder about is my costume for next year:)

xoxo, Jenna

PS~ Did I mention I was offered  a job a mile into the race?

Day Seven, December Seven

Day Seven–December Seven #25DaysofChristmas #SweetSweatCountdown

Activity du jour: Skating in Bryant Park (in the rain!!)

I'm sure most New Yorkers would agree there is nothing quite as awful as walking through the theatre district at 7:50pm on Friday in the rain.  It could be the worst combination of all time.  But I tell you what... the second you walk off the streets and into Bryant Park, your heart instantly feels a little lighter. Christmas music is playing, the air smells like kettle corn, and you can hear everyone laughing around the skating pond.  It is like a little oasis in the middle of chaos.

Bryant Park could possibly be my favorite spot in New York.  It is amazing at every point throughout the year, but it is the most beautiful and magical at Christmas time.  I love to come here early in the morning before any one else has arrived and just skate. Tonight, despite the rain and the massive amounts of middle schoolers, it was still just so peaceful.  It's the perfect place to just think, to unwind, and to soak in the joy of the season.

Expect to see another post from Bryant Park! It's simply irresistible this time of year:)

Day Six, December Six

Day Six–December Six #25DaysofChristmas #SweetSweatCountdown

Activity du jour: St. Nicholas Day Run in Central Park!!

December 6th was always exciting in my home growing up. We always put out our shoes before bed on December 5th.  Then woke up the next morning to find candy and a new Christmas Tree ornament in our shoe by the fireplace.

Though no candy or ornaments in my sneakers this morning, I decided to lace up and meet my race buddy, Elena, in Columbus Circle for a little Santa run in the park.  It was a quick and sunny three miles through the park, chatting about our plans for Race Day on Saturday.

Then heading home, I had the BEST New York City moment ever!! I decided I would run along Central Park South, where tons of vendors and horse drawn carriages line the street and sidewalks.  As I was running, literally every vendor along the street was shouting (in a cheerful and totally not creepy way): "Good morning Santa!"  "Hello Santa!" "Merry Christmas!" "I love you, Santa!"...and right as I was passing a large group of them, I ran through a flock of pigeons that all flew up into the air around me.  Everyone was smiling, and laughing and enjoying the moment.    It was straight out of a movie:)

Isn't New York just amazing during the holidays?!

Day Five, December Five

Activity du jour: Mistletoe Run!!

Today my lovely job sent me running (literally) all over the upper west side inviting studios, gyms, etc to our holiday party... with mistletoe on my head and invitations in hand.  (Our invites read: Meet us under the mistletoe!)

I zigzagged between avenues from west 72nd street all the way up to 106th... Then finally ended back at 75th street.

I decided I needed a sign on my back that read: If you can catch me, you can kiss me! Maybe for my race Saturday:)

Have any ideas for other fun holiday themed runs?

Happy mistletoe-ing!!

xoxo, Jenna

PS- I know I should've mapped my run because it was ridiculous... But I was too worried about my pursuers;)

Day Four, December Four

Day Four–December Four #25DaysofChristmas #SweetSweatCountdown

Activity du jour:  Flash Back to my Miss Pennsylvania Workout routine!!

When I was competing for Miss Pennsylvania, I did this 45 minutes workout routine with 5 pound weights...after I swimming for 30 minutes, and walking 3 miles.  At the time, I didn't think twice about how difficult it was...and I did it 5 times a week and additional cardio the other two!  I had my eyes on a goal and wasn't going to let anything stop me.

The workout involves hundreds of leg lifts, squads, and dozens of sets of bicep curls, triceps, and other arm exercises I don't know the names of!  The key was low weight and high repetition! It was a lot...but like I said, if you have your eyes set on something you just don't settle for mediocre:)

Looking forward to some holiday themed runs later this week!!

xoxo, Jenna

PS--I just had to make today Christmas themed...hence the crazy tree ears I found in my roommates Christmas decor box:)

Day Three, December Three

Day Three–December Three #25DaysofChristmas #SweetSweatCountdown

Activity du jour:  Yoga in the window and a quick summer run!

I'm such a lucky lady because randomly when I'm at work, I get to practice yoga in our store window. Today was one of those days!   Learning to do a headstand was in my goals this fall...and bam! Looks like I crushed it;)

I also got home and couldn't resist going for a quick run in the 65 degree weather!! Who would've thought I'd be happy running in shorts in December?!

xoxo, Jenna

Want to learn to do a headstand?? Here's an awesome video that breaks it down step by step:

Day Two, December Two

Activity du jour:  Core Challenge!

Today was one of those days when you are just scrambling for minutes! I was out and about all day, and came home to find my roommates had been like elves decorating our apartment all day! I mean...look at that tree and fire place! (Yes...our new york city apartment has a fireplace.)

Too late and too dark to run outside, I decided to do our household favorite quick workout in our the newly decorated living room.

Here's our Core Challenge! (Courtesy of someone on Pinterest...another household favorite;))

Give it a shot sometime and let me know your thoughts!

xoxo, Jenna

PS-- Looking at Christmas ornaments is a great distraction during those grueling planks;)

Day One, December One

Day One--December One #25DaysofChristmas #SweetSweatCountdown

Activity du jour: Running with The Most Informal Running Club Ever, NYC!

We met outside the Christmas Shops in Union Square, snapped a pic, and took off running. The only rule: Nobody can die.

Ran a chilly three +miles along the East River, ending at B Cup in the East Village for Brunch!

First day success!!

Run with your heart

So Sunday,  I ran my first half marathon in Central Park!

It is exhilarating to do something you never imagined yourself even capable of doing.   But what's even more amazing to me is how much I relied on the girls running the race with me.  Running the last 4 miles I knew that if my fellow runner, Lauralea, wasn't right there with me I would have undoubtedly stopped running.  And she expressed to me after the race that she wouldn't have made it through the last stretch without me there.

At mile nine, it came down to forgetting about my legs, and remembering the people who inspire me.  I thought about Lauralea still running next to me.   I thought about my family waiting at the finish.  I thought about my younger brother facing his own challenges in college.  I thought about my close friends who have overcome so much so early in life.   The people in my life, near and far, kept me running.

Run with your heart towards your goals.  Be inspired by those around you.  If something is difficult, seemingly near impossible...don't do it alone.  We thrive in community and we can test our limits with a support net around us.  And no matter what, don't stop.  Just keep running.

What goals have you set that seem impossible?  Find someone to encourage you, inspire you and run along side you.  You'll get there; I promise.
